最小离地间隙是指：汽车在满载（允许最大荷载质量）的情况下，底盘最低点距离地面的距离。

一般来说，轿车车身最低点一般是变速箱或者机油底壳的下方、越野车的最低点一般是前后桥的差速器。

最小离地间隙越大，车辆通过有障碍物或凹凸不平的地面能力就越强，但重心偏高，降低了稳定性；最小离地间隙越小，通过能力就越弱，但重心低可以增加稳定性。汽车的离地间隙各个高度值不是静止不变的，它取决于负载状况。
